The Magic of Lavender: A History Rooted in Wellness
There’s something timeless about lavender. Maybe it’s the way the scent instantly calms the mind—or how a single sprig can transform a room into a peaceful place. At Rising Star Lavender Farm, we don’t just grow lavender. We live with it. We walk among it, harvest it by hand, and distill it with care right here in North Idaho. Every drop of oil we produce carries the essence of this land and the healing power of this extraordinary plant.
Essential oils—often called nature’s pharmacy—have been used for thousands of years to support health, soothe the spirit, and elevate daily rituals. But among them, lavender holds a very special place.
A Plant With Deep Roots
Lavender has been with us for centuries. In fact, the name comes from the Latin word lavare, meaning “to wash.” Ancient Romans used lavender not only to scent their baths, linens, and hair, but also for its healing benefits—soothing skin, relieving muscle fatigue, and promoting peace of mind.
Even earlier civilizations recognized its power. Egyptians used it in mummification and as a perfume for royalty. Greeks and Hebrews referred to it as “nard” or “spikenard,” and it’s mentioned multiple times in the Bible. Lavender was cherished as a sacred plant—fit for kings and queens and common folk alike.
From Wordrobes to Wellness
Did you know that in the Middle Ages, lavender was used to ward off the plague? People would tuck dried bundles into drawers and wardrobes to repel insects and guard against illness. And during the Renaissance, laundry women would hang their linens over lavender bushes to infuse them with a fresh, clean scent.
We still use lavender in similar ways today—maybe not for plague prevention, but certainly for its ability to bring freshness, calm, and comfort into our lives.
Culinary, Medicinal, and More
One of the most beautiful things about lavender is how versatile it is. You’ll find it in our oils, yes—but also in teas, lemonades, desserts, bath soaks, and even on the grill. It adds a fragrant, floral touch to both sweet and savory dishes. In our own kitchen, we love experimenting with lavender in homemade syrups, roasted vegetables, and shortbread cookies.
But beyond its culinary charm, lavender remains a wellness essential. It’s known to:
Promote restful sleep
Ease stress and anxiety
Support inflammation relief
Soothe skin irritations
Enhance mood and clarity
When life feels overwhelming, I always find myself reaching for our pure lavender oil. A few drops on my wrists, in the bath, or diffused through the house—it has a way of bringing everything back into balance.
From the Fields of North Idaho
There’s something special about the lavender we grow here in North Idaho. The mountain air, the clean soil, the long summer days—it all contributes to a rich, calming aroma you can’t quite get anywhere else. Some of the best lavender in the world may still come from the Mediterranean, but I’m proud to say that American-grown varieties are making a name for themselves too. Especially right here at Rising Star Lavender Farm.
And yes, I’ll shamelessly say it—Hayden, Idaho is one of those rising stars.
What’s Next
Lavender has stood the test of time—and in many ways, it continues to surprise us. It’s found its way into skincare, wellness rituals, spiritual practices, and modern natural remedies. And it’s not going anywhere.
In next month’s blog, I’ll be sharing a few of my favorite lavender recipes, including a calming tea blend and a lavender-honey dressing that’s perfect for summer salads.
